Diva Design 2015 kicks-off year at Space Center Houston

2015-02-03
More than 250 local middle school girls learned about careers based in science and math and what it takes to be successful recently during the Diva Design 2015 kick-off at Space Center Houston. Jointly sponsored by Johnson Space Center, Microsoft and Space Center Houston, Diva Design is a gender specific program that encourages young women to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math) fields.

“The program does more than inspire these young women to pursue STEM careers," said LaTanya Miles of Space Center Houston. "It provides them the opportunity to integrate other skills such as time management and work ethics."

During the day-long event, JSC employees, environmental engineer Cinda Chullen and information systems manager Tondra Allen, shared accounts of their careers and offered advice to the young women on how to attain full potential in STEM-based careers.

In March and April, Microsoft will provide software and hardware for hands-on experiences in eight different sessions covering four subject matter areas including application design, material science, robotics and 3D technology/design.

The sessions will take place at Space Center Houston with their education staff providing the technical/scientific lessons and hands-on activities for the students. JSC will provide speakers and technical assistance for the sessions.
