Meet Your EAP Friend: Daisy Wei

2020-11-09

This is the fourth installment in a series introducing NASA Johnson Space Center team members to the many people working in the Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Catch up on the first and second installments.

Oftentimes, it can be scary to take that first step and reach out when you’re struggling, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the number of people who are having a hard time. Daisy Wei, one of four clinicians in Johnson’s EAP, could be one of the professionals you would speak with if you make an appointment.

Get to know a little about her, below.

What is your job title?
EAP counselor.

What do you do for the Employee Assistance Program?
I support employees and their dependents with counseling services, consultations, and resources. I co-host the daily Morning Mindfulness meditation sessions and weekly stress-relief workshops (Thursdays).  EAP also offers a bi-weekly Life After Loss grief support group and monthly Caregiving and Eldercare Support Network meetings that I facilitate.

For people hesitant to reach out to the EAP, what would you like them to know?
You don’t have to go through hardships alone, and no one should. Part of resiliency comes from the connections and community of our support system, not a team of one.

How has your own personal/professional background influenced your work with the EAP?
I worked for years in nonprofit mental health education and advocacy, and then years as a medical social worker. I enjoyed both and love that I get to encompass those roles in supporting the JSC workforce with the EAP work we do.

These are emotionally fraught times with the pandemic, divisive politics, and other struggles. What is your best advice for those who need help being centered and happy?
Find your “soul food” and look for the little victories — the people, activities, and aspects of life that matter to you, remind you who you are, and what matters most.

Now, more about you!

Where did you grow up?
Mostly Houston and Sugar Land. We moved away from Texas during various parts of my childhood, but always, in time, ended up in Houston again.

How long have you been at JSC?
Just over nine years now.

What have you learned about yourself that you didn’t know before because of the pandemic?
I can’t seem to enjoy chips and salsa the same at home! On a more serious note: I have an even greater appreciation of my support system and all that they are.

What’s your idea of the perfect Thanksgiving?
Being in the company of good people – especially friends who have become chosen family, having great food, conversations, and making memories.  A chance to slow down, enjoy the moment, and focus on what matters.

What’s most likely to bring a smile to your face?
Puppies and kittens, of course. Nature in general ... pretty days with good weather.

Tell us a fun fact about you.
I love music and going to concerts.
