Meet Your EAP Friend: Jasmine Thomas

by Catherine Ragin Williams | 2020-09-08

This is the first installment in a series introducing NASA Johnson Space Center team members to the many people working in the Employee Assistance Program (EAP).

Oftentimes, it can be scary to take that first step and reach out when you’re struggling, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the number of people who are having a hard time. If you call or email the EAP, chances are it will be Jasmine Thomas on the other end of the line or replying to your note. Get to know a little about her!

What is your job title?

Administrative Assistant.

What do you do for the Employee Assistance Program?

I’m responsible for scheduling clients, assisting with events, and researching and posting resources for our site.

For people hesitant to reach out to the EAP, what would you like them to know?

There is never any shame in asking for help. Taking that first step may not be easy, but it can be worth it.

How has your own personal/professional background influenced your work with the EAP?

I’ve seen what a difference it can make when one takes the time to take care of their mental health. To be part of that process for folks is an honor.

Resiliency has proven to be an invaluable trait during these challenging, strange times. How do you encourage others to build a capacity for resilience within themselves?

I try to remind them to be patient with themselves. It’s important to afford ourselves the same kindness that we extend to others.

Now, more about you!

Where did you grow up?

I’m Texas born and raised! I was born in San Antonio but grew up here in Houston!

How long have you been at Johnson?

I’ve been with Johnson for three years.

What have you learned about yourself that you didn’t know before because of the pandemic?

I’m not as much of a homebody as I thought! Even I got stir crazy when we went into lockdown.

Summer is quickly approaching! What do you consider your favorite summertime activity?

Going to parades or festivals!

What kinds of things bring a smile to your face?

Seeing people overcome a challenge! Whether it be something like a difficult game or puzzle or completing a huge project.

Is there a quote or piece of advice that continues to inspire you (and what is it)?

It’s human to make mistakes. Do your best to push forward and fix them.
