Kranz Junior High is ‘go for launch’

2018-10-02

Dickinson Independent School District celebrated the opening of the district’s second junior high during a special dedication ceremony on Sept. 27 in the newly minted Kranz Junior High School (KJHS) Auditorium.

The ceremony honored the school’s namesake, Eugene "Gene" Kranz, a NASA pioneer who served as a flight director in the famed Mission Control Center for the Gemini and Apollo programs. Kranz also happens to be a longtime Dickinson resident.

In addition to space-themed treats and eats, the night included a special performance of “Apollo 13” by the KJHS band and “My America” by the KJHS choir.

NASA Johnson Space Center Director Mark Geyer joined Kranz on stage for the event, where Kranz reiterated the importance of an education that emphasizes STEM fundamentals. That night, Kranz was also honored with a presentation of donated artwork by Johnson’s own Logan Goodson, a graphic designer and artist.

Kranz wielded oversized scissors to cut the ribbon draped across the stage, heralding a new generation of learners within. He didn’t leave empty-handed, either. Kranz has a new vest to add to the collection of vests he wore as a flight director—but this one is emblazoned with the new school’s logo.
