SpaceCom 2017 highlights collaboration, partnerships as a catalyst for innovation and growth

2017-12-13
Now in its third year, SpaceCom 2017 brought together target industries from the Houston area (medical, energy, maritime, agribusiness, advanced manufacturing and new aerospace) from Dec. 5 to 7 to accelerate innovation and commercial development between the sectors and bridge new partnerships. NASA’s Johnson Space Center played a big role in the event, showcasing examples of how businesses can build on space technologies and foster co-development on an international scale.

The opening ceremony featured keynote speakers Ellen Ochoa, director of Johnson, and acting NASA Administration Robert Lightfoot. Additional discussion panels included participation from Dr. Robert Satcher, a former astronaut who is now a surgical oncologist at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston, as well as NASA Associate Administrator of the Space Technology Mission Directorate Steve Jurczyk.

A popular catalyst for innovation and growth, this year’s conference attendance exceeded 1,500 for the conference and 2,000 for the exposition portion. The VIP Reception on Dec. 6 drew an audience of senior executives, elected officials and researchers.

The center looks forward to joining forces at the space conference, which brings together diverse stakeholders involved in the commercial development and utilization of space. Johnson’s efforts focus on the application of space technologies and how they can revolutionize Earth-based industries, while NASA’s presence reflects the agency’s commitment to commercialization, transformative technology and partnerships.
