All about sustainability? You can count on it (and our birds!)

2017-01-10
This female summer tanager (Piranga rubra) arrived at Johnson Space Center in the spring after spending the winter in Central or South America. These brightly colored migratory birds exhibit clear sexual dimorphism, meaning the male and female birds of this species look distinct. Male summer tanagers are completely red, but are otherwise similar to the female birds in size and morphology. These birds are best seen at JSC during spring and fall migration, as they tend to summer in woodland habitat that is not common at JSC.

The annual three-week Christmas bird count finished on Jan. 5, and JSC is one of the consistently visited sites. Read this month’s Sustainability Opportunities to find out when you can see a live bird at JSC and learn about conservation measures with wildlife biologist Matt Strausser, as well as other news and events.
