A resolution so easy to keep you’ll want to add it to your list in 2017

2016-12-22
If you are thinking about sitting out a New Year’s resolution to avoid setback, first take a look at these sustainable accomplishments from 2016. You might find a simple behavior change that takes seconds and makes a difference.

According to EnergyStar, unplugging power strips at the end of the day could save U.S. households eight percent in electricity costs. That amounts to roughly $100 per year—and just imagine what that could do for Johnson Space Center.

Thanks to the JSC Green Team, this scenario played out from August to October during the JSC Energy Competition. Team members from Buildings 12 and 321 gathered on Halloween to celebrate their part in reducing energy consumption—and eat cake. Even in some of the hottest months of the year, more than 55 percent of participating buildings decreased their cumulative electrical consumption compared to the baseline (taken from May to July). This was over only a three-month period, meaning there is a lot of potential to reduce consumption throughout the entire year.

Reducing your energy consumption can take seconds, and it saves money and energy. The electricity, heat and transportation demands in the United States account for the largest sources of greenhouse gas emissions. Reducing the impacts of personal choices can make a difference on the road, in our homes and at work. Disconnecting power strips and peripheral equipment at the end of each day eliminates standby power and is one way to reduce consumption and save.

Federal guidance set a goal for NASA to reduce its annual energy usage by 2.5 percent through Fiscal Year (FY) 2025 when compared to FY2015. Executive Order 13693 plans for federal sustainability in the next decade, including sustainable buildings.

The JSC Green Team promotes other sustainability events, both on-site and those that integrate with the surrounding communities. They organize JSC participation in the annual Trash Bash, Bike to Work Day and monthly “green drinks” events. In addition, the team will be taking on another opportunity in 2017 to promote renewable energy and science, technology, engineering and math education by partnering with a local middle school to demonstrate and help students build solar cars.

Seed these behaviors and set the stage for a low-consumption year. Now that’s an achievable resolution worth making.
