Nyberg introduces Carrie Underwood, gives graduation speech

2013-08-26
Who had the opportunity to introduce Grammy winner Carrie Underwood at country music festival, WE Fest "Livin' the Dream in 2013"? And present the keynote message at the University of North Dakota’s (UND) commencement ceremony? None other than NASA's very own, astronaut Karen Nyberg who is currently serving as a flight engineer aboard the International Space Station for Expedition 36.

Can you imagine introducing a country music superstar in front of 47,000 fans? Or better yet, being at a concert only to hear the headliner introduced by an astronaut floating in microgravity on the space station? This is exactly what Nyberg and country music fans experienced on Aug. 3 at the 31st annual WE Fest in Detroit Lakes, Minn. as Nyberg introduced Carrie Underwood via video on the jumbotron from the space station. It was truly an introduction out of this world for one of country music's biggest celebrities.

She shares with the crowd, “Country music is loved around the world and brings people from all nations together just like the International Space Station does as we conduct research to benefit all of you back on Earth.”

Check out Nyberg’s big moment.

Nyberg also had the opportunity to record the keynote address for the graduates of her alma mater, UND, which was played at their commencement ceremony on Friday, Aug. 2. Nyberg, who graduated from UND with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering in 1994, was the first UND graduate to go into space.

Nyberg speaks about how UND helped to make her childhood dream of becoming an astronaut come true and the importance of the space station. She offers the graduates encouraging words saying, "Be proud of yourselves and your school. Keep dreaming and keep reaching for your stars. You've already proven you can do it. With continued hard work, lifelong learning and dedication, the future, the world and beyond are yours."
