OPM update on identity theft protection
2016-07-13
To provide you with an update from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) regarding the malicious cyber intrusions carried out against the federal government last year, please read below about OPM’s current response, the services provided to impacted individuals and future enhancements to cybersecurity.
1. Current response:
OPM notified those impacted by the personnel records incident and completed the initial mailing of notification letters to those affected by the background investigation records incident. The letter will detail which incident impacted you, or you may click here for an in-depth explanation.
To verify the authenticity of the letter, a copy of each letter is posted here. Recipients are invited to sign up for credit and identity-monitoring services, which include identity-theft protection services (including identity restoration and identity theft insurance).
If you experience identity theft, OPM has established call centers to help in restoring your identity or if you want to file a claim under the identity theft insurance.
2. Services:
On June 1, OPM increased the amount of identity theft insurance provided to those impacted by either cyber incident from $1 million to $5 million, and affected individuals are automatically covered. OPM is currently working to extend credit monitoring and identity-protection services to those impacted by either incident for a minimum of 10 years.
