Attention parents, teachers and kids: It’s ‘Space Week’ at Camp Google

2015-07-23
You won’t need a tent, flashlight or bug spray for this adventure—happy campers across the nation have a unique opportunity to experience #CampGoogle from virtually anywhere.

Knowing that kids are inquisitive explorers who like to discover new and exciting things, Google created free science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)-based summer camps for kids ages 7 to 10, where they can learn through fun, interactive science activities. With the theme “Let’s Find Out,” the virtual camps are designed to encourage children to ask questions about the world around them.

Although Space Week is July 20 to 26, content will be online through summer 2016 for campers to view space-themed videos, learn about space food and participate in do-it-yourself activities to earn Zero G, Stargazer and Space Chef badges.

This just in at the Space Week campsite: a “space food” video filmed at Johnson Space Center featuring science blogger/YouTube celebrity Michael Stevens (Vsauce.com), astronaut Don Pettit and Food Lab Systems Manager Vickie Kloeris, who were judges of entrées made by two junior chefs. The meals were prepared using food items available to astronauts on the space station and were evaluated on taste, nutrition and creativity (campfire not required).

But wait … there’s “s’more:” In addition to Space Week, Google set up camp with different themes and partners: Ocean Week with National Geographic, Nature Week with the National Park Service and Music Week highlighting singer Zendaya.

You can send the kids to camp here. Or go to Google.com, where Space Week is featured today!
