Because of Diva Design, there may just be an app for that

Houston-area middle school girls recently participated in a Diva Design collaboration with Johnson Space Center, Space Center Houston (SCH) and Microsoft, learning hands-on computer application (app) design with experts. The participants met up on April 16 to put the final touches on their projects, focusing on apps that deal with issues teens and their communities face.

The girls will compete their app projects on May 14 from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at SCH. The judges, comprised of subject-matter experts from JSC’s Speakers Bureau and Microsoft, have mentored the girls in the last several months leading up to the challenge. Judges Sean Miller, Cinda Chullen, Tondra Allen and Glenda Johnson from JSC, as well as Microsoft’s Desirea Daniels, will have a difficult time combing through the many deserving apps to choose a final winner.

“What I loved the most from this series was watching these young ladies take their passions and their concerns for their community and turn it into an app idea that could actually be used to make their communities better,” Daniels said. “I was inspired by what these ladies had come up with that would make their communities safer, healthier and more beautiful places to live in.”

Daniels continued, “We were truly honored to be a part of this year’s Diva Designs. We are already looking forward to next year’s collaboration and can’t wait to make next year’s event even bigger and more impactful.”
