NASA’s Johnson Space Center Director Vanessa Wyche welcomed employees to a special town hall featuring NASA Administrator Bill Nelson on Oct. 10, 2023. Wyche provided several updates on activities at Johnson and moderated a wide-ranging fireside chat with Nelson that covered the future of low Earth orbit, the International Space Station's 25th anniversary, the reveal and analysis of the OSIRIS-REx asteroid sample return, and upcoming milestones in human spaceflight.

Nelson declared the Artemis era to be the golden age of spaceflight. He spoke about the agency’s unique ability to unify and inspire people around the globe. Nelson observed that, as a payload specialist on Space Shuttle Columbia’s STS-61-C mission in 1986, he did not see racial or political divisions as he looked down on Earth, but the reality that we are all in this together. Nelson applauded Johnson’s work to expand commercial partners’ activities in low Earth orbit and highlighted several key benefits of scientific research that has been conducted on the International Space Station in collaboration with private companies. He also noted the importance of tapping commercial partners' creativity and capabilities to enable NASA to invest its resources in deep space exploration.
