While it was announced on Sept. 19, 1961, that NASA had selected Houston as the site of the new Manned Spacecraft Center, now NASA's Johnson Space Center, it was really October 1961 when an advanced team secured temporary office space throughout Houston to begin the transition from NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia. As the new Clear Lake site was being constructed, with its initial groundbreaking on April 2, 1962, NASA employees settled into 13 temporary facilities throughout southeast Houston.

As general mission operations began to take shape, another mission was evident from the start: employee communications of the major milestones and work underway to facilitate a human spaceflight program. Enter: Roundup.
