Start January with (Virtual) Events at JSC!

2021 promises many great achievements for JSC as we approach major ISS, CCP, and Artemis milestones in the coming months. As we look forward to these successes, it is important to remember the great responsibility that each of us has to protect the mission and assure the safety of our crews. This month JSC will host a variety of virtual events that look to this bright future while recognizing the lessons to be learned from our past.

A summary of the January events at the center are displayed below. Stay tuned to Roundup Today for more details as events are subject to shift due to COVID-19 safety protocols. 

January 2021 Center Event Schedule 

Tuesday, Jan. 12, 2021 – JSC Town Hall

On Jan. 12 from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., JSC Center Director Mark Geyer will provide a center status and share his goals for the center and the continuation of Dare. Unite. Explore. in 2021.

This event will be live on USTREAM.

Thursday, Jan. 14, 2021 – Back in the Saddle with Jim Lovell and Fred Haise

On Jan. 14 from 12 to 1 p.m., JSC will kick off the year with a renewed focus on safety by revisiting one of NASA’s greatest accomplishments and closest calls.

Apollo 13 Astronauts Jim Lovell and Fred Haise will be joined by Chief Flight Director Holly Ridings, former Flight Director Milt Windler, Apollo/Orion Engineer Hank Rotter, and Chief of Safety and Mission Assurance Russ DeLoach will moderate as the panelists discuss lessons learned from Apollo 13 that apply to Artemis missions planned in the coming years.

This event will be live on USTREAM and questions for the panelists will be open in advance of the event.

Monday, Jan. 25, 2021 – Challenger after 35 Years: A Discussion with Author Diane Vaughan

On Jan. 25 from 2:30 to 4 p.m., a special JSC panel will reflect on the Challenger tragedy and connect the lessons learned from the Challenger tragedy to current NASA missions.

JSC Center Director Mark Geyer will host the panel with special guest Dr. Diane Vaughan, author of “The Challenger Launch Decision”, FOD Deputy Director Norm Knight, ISS Chief Safety Officer Mike Surber, and ISS Chief Engineer Heather McDonald.

This event will be live on USTREAM.

Thursday, Jan. 28, 2021 – 2021 Day of Remembrance/ Challenger 35th Anniversary

On Jan. 28 at 10 a.m., JSC will remember the heroes from Apollo 1, Challenger, and Columbia. There will also be recognition of the 35th anniversary of the Challenger tragedy. 

Due to COVID-19 in-person attendance will be limited, and all are welcome to attend virtually via USTREAM.
