How JSC Is Preparing for Your Stage 2 Arrival

by Noah J. Michelsohn | 2020-10-15

As JSC safely and thoughtfully transitions to Stage 2 of the NASA Response Framework for Return to On-Site Work, Center Operations has been hard at work preparing the center to make the gradual return as safe and effective as possible.

Center Operations and the JSC Pandemic Incident Response Team (PIRG) have been preparing for this day for months, working alongside each directorate to modify office spaces for social distancing and defining procedures for cleaning, distributing PPE, and contact tracing.

Below are some of the modifications to the center that have taken in place with your safety in mind. See some photos of this work in action at the bottom of this story.

  • Custodial is cleaning conference rooms, elevators and stairwells, lobby and corridors, break rooms, restrooms, and all common touch points twice daily for all buildings.
  • Each employee will receive a 2oz bottle of Purell hand sanitizer along with a face covering for their use.
  • 61 Hand Sanitizer stations were deployed across the Center. The focus is having stations in major building lobbies.
  • Restrooms are cleaned twice a day for all buildings with 100 or more occupants. Otherwise, smaller occupied building restrooms are cleaned 2-3 times a week.
  • 88 plexiglass barrier requests have been received and installed so far, additional plexiglass shipment is in route in anticipation of additional future requests.
  • About 5,000 signs have been distributed and installed in lobbies, stairwells, and offices to remind employees to mask up, spatial distance, etc.
  • A building cleaning checklist is posted on every floor near the elevator or at the entrance to smaller buildings so that occupants can check to see when the area has been cleaned.
  • HVAC concerns mentioned by employees in the town halls have been addressed (filters, outside air, 24/7 operations) and final checks will be conducted through the weekend
  • All buildings have had their water supplies flushed to ensure cleanliness and residual chlorine levels are maintained.
  • Water fountains, restrooms and kitchens, etc. have been continually flushed and maintained. The system has undergone an additional flushing just prior to return and we are going floor by floor to exercise sinks, kitchen areas, water fountains etc.
  • 500 traveler COVID supply packages have been distributed to employees who have needed to travel to help them stay safe on their trips.

While these modifications will go a long way to protecting each other and the mission, the most important thing that we each can do is to wear a mask when in a common area, social distance, and follow the center guidance.
