Small Groups, Big Results

by WELL ERG | 2020-07-28

At NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the Women Excelling in Life and Leadership (WELL) Employee Resource Group (ERG) has been working diligently in the planning, coordination, and execution of meaningful virtual events to provide the NASA workforce with professional development and volunteering opportunities, as well as teleworking strategies.

Recently, Janette Garcia and Kristine Nicole Davis, officers of the WELL ERG, coordinated and executed the first Small Mentoring Groups networking event, which consisted of 30-minutes sessions where Johnson professionals had the opportunity to meet virtually and have small-group discussions over a variety of topics, including:

  • Career Development

  • Work/Life Balance

  • Work from Home Tips

  • Early Career

  • Health and Fitness

  • Community Involvement

  • Program/Project Management

“In January, I proposed the idea of having a speed mentoring event for all employees at Johnson. My goal was to provide an opportunity for NASA professionals to meet with senior leaders in small groups in order to learn from their lessons learned and their professional experiences. Due to COVID-19 pandemic, this mentoring event had to be virtual and slightly different. In early June, Kristine Nicole Davis and I started coordinating the Small Mentoring Groups virtual event. Overall, we had 15 small mentoring groups consisting of three to four employees per group. We would like to thank all of the employees who participated, and we hope this was a great experience for everyone! ” – Janette Garcia

On July 17, approximately 65 Johnson professionals joined the Small Mentoring Groups event to virtually meet, learn from each other’s life/professional experiences, and share work-from-home tips.

Below are screenshots of five of the 15 small mentoring groups in action.
