Starport Supports Johnson Space Center

by Nicole Hernandez | 2020-04-21

As we all adapt to what has become a new normal way of life, the Starport team has been working diligently to adapt our services for NASA’s Johnson Space Center community. Our operational goals (like many others) have changed as we find ways to not only provide support for our members, but for everyone in our surrounding community. We are currently designing a style of virtual wellness to fit our current situation and lifestyle.

Starport’s lines of business — Wellness and Fitness, Sports and Recreation, Retail, Creative Learning, Facility Rentals, and Food Services — are all working together to figure out what our next steps look like. Whether its sanitizing and maintaining our facility, arranging wellness and fitness options or providing stocked vending machines for employees still working on-site, we are for looking the best possible ways to provide support any way we can.

Since we have had to shut down our fitness center, retail stores and other events, we have created an abundance of virtual opportunities that are up and running strong. We want nothing more than to continue to provide the services to our community that we enjoy doing, but now it was time to get creative and innovative.

Starport Fitness. The Starport team wants you to feel comfortable once you return. In addition to taking extra precautions to sanitize our facility, we are developing new procedures to modify the way we operate once our doors open again. We have discussed various plans from enhanced cleaning procedures, social-distancing guidelines and continued virtual offerings to limit personal contact.

My second home is Starport. We all like new things, or at least we want to keep our stuff in good order, so I am focusing on getting the Fitness Center in tip-top shape for when we all return. If I can’t see and chat with all our regulars, the least I can do is to try to make sure some of the more challenging comments and suggestions over the years can start to be addressed. Many of these tasks would bring some of our equipment and/or the whole fitness center out of commission for a few hours, or even a few days. I am going to take this time now to work on sprucing everything up.” – Joel Grant, Wellness and Fitness Manager

What’s Happening Virtually?

Wellness and Fitness

- Weekly newsletters are being released with overall wellness articles and virtual fitness options. Check out the first five editions on our website: https://starport.jsc.nasa.gov/en/events/engage

- Virtual workouts. Starport has collected a variety of on-demand workouts, including some of your favorites from Les Mills, Beachbody and Starport instructors.

- Fitness equipment rentals. Stationary bikes and BodyPump weight sets are now available for rent.

- Starport YouTube channel. Virtual workouts are provided by our Starport instructors. New videos are added every week!

- Livestream workouts on Facebook and YouTube.

“I just wanted to maintain connection with our community. We offer amazing master classes thanks to our partnership with Les Mills on demand, but I know our members and they know me, and that can’t be replaced. So, my friend and colleague Cambria decided to record a class to offer to our Starport members and our followers on social media to celebrate how we are still connected in the midst of this,” said Luca Callini, Starport instructor.

Thank You to Our Starport Partners

“In efforts to reduce financial strain during this time, we will be extending Starport Partner memberships at least until spring 2021. This means that your company’s fitness memberships and room rental credits are paused for as long as we are in non-operational status. When we return to our country’s ‘new normal,’ rest assured that our facility will institute new safety measures to safeguard or customers, members and guests.” – Debbie Denton-Misfeldt, Starport Operations Manager

Until We Return

Starport will continue to modify operational procedures to support the JSC community as we acclimate to what the future holds and what life looks like from here.

We will strive to continue to engage, enrich and engage our community, as we are all in this together.
