Erin Sholl
I am branch chief of the Operations and Visiting Vehicle Safety Branch, responsible for
technical leadership in Safety and Mission Assurance (SMA). I perform
supervisory duties like resource planning, budgeting, performance appraisals,
interfacing with customers and strategic planning, but my favorite part is the
people. I love getting to guide and mentor them in their careers and being an
advocate for my team. I have had the opportunity to perform in
various rotations throughout my safety career. Although they did not all lead
me in the exact path I thought they would, I would do each one over again for the
unique experience and knowledge I gained from them. Through these opportunities, I gained new
skills and developed relationships that have been invaluable in helping me
determine what is important to me in my career and the role that I play for SMA
and, maybe more importantly, what is not. Stepping outside my comfort zone
enabled me to gain a broad experience of integration, leadership and
interpersonal skills that helped me earn the position I am in today. I always loved and excelled at math and
science, so when it was time to declare a major and I still did not really know
what I wanted to do with my life, I picked chemical engineering (my high school
chem teacher was amazing). The early courses were great, but when I had my
first chemical engineering class, I hated it! I switched to aerospace, met a
friend who had interned at Johnson Space Center, and decided that is where I
was going to work! Get the rest of the story on Sholl in this NASA
Safety Center article.
