JSC bids farewell to spring interns, welcomes summer interns

2014-05-13
Johnson Space Center said a fond farewell recently to more than 25 spring interns that had been working at the center during the spring semester and, for some, longer. They are not all leaving. In the next couple of weeks, the center will welcome more than 100 summer interns, with 11 returning from the spring.

JSC’s internship program is designed to provide both an inspiring educational opportunity for students and productive help for the JSC team. It turns out the objectives of the program are almost perfectly reflected in a sampling of parting comments provided by some of those spring interns:
  • “Because of my work with the Advanced Space Suit Team, I have accepted a full-time job with ILC Dover as a spacesuit design engineer. I will be designing NASA’s new Z-2 spacesuit.
  • “My NASA internship has solidified my goal of pursuing engineering [research and development] work as a career. It has also confirmed my goal of working with robotics.”
  • “After this internship and my exposure to software robotics and simulations, I have refined my career goals and am now pursuing a career goal in robotics and software.”
  • “This internship directly affected my choosing Georgia Tech for its electric propulsion laboratory to complete my master’s degree in aerospace engineering.”
  • “This internship inspired me to continue my education in engineering. I hope to further my education to the point of getting my Ph.D.”
  • “My internship has led me to consider obtaining a graduate degree in renewable energy engineering.”
JSC team members interested in hosting an intern or learning more about the program should contact the JSC Intern Coordinator Missy Matthias at 281-792-7844.

Interns for the summer session have been selected and placed. Students are currently applying for the fall session until June 1. Mentors should enter their projects in the One Stop Shopping Initiative before June 1 so students can apply directly to their project.

See why JSC’s internship program often creates life-changing inspiration for students and rewards for mentors as several of the participants in the center’s spring 2014 internships share their experiences.
