Mayor Turner Visits JSC for Black History Month

In celebration of Black History Month, the African-American Employee Resource Group (AAERG) hosted Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner at NASA’s Johnson Space Center on Feb. 21. Turner’s speech, which focused on the Black History Month theme “Black Migrations,” was an integral part of the AAERG’s mission to highlight the important contributions of African-Americans in art, literature, science, sports and pop culture throughout February.

Turner keyed in on the idea that tomorrow will be better than today. He spoke of growing up in a low-income Houston household—but also of not allowing one’s circumstances to limit the probability of a better life. He believed that through the power of education, he could achieve his goals. While neither of Turner’s parents attended college, his desire to learn and relentless hard work allowed him to become the mayor of the fourth largest city in the United States.

After sharing some of his personal stories, Turner complimented Johnson on continued innovation in the technology realm. Turner added that his vision is to continue to attract talent and industry to the city, transforming Houston into the “Silicon Bayou.”
