They Came, They Saw … They Loved it!

On Oct. 27, NASA’s Johnson Space Center opened its main gate to usher in the Houston community for an Open House celebrating NASA's 60th anniversary and the International Space Station's 20th anniversary. People who ordinarily don’t get to see what happens behind the scenes at their local NASA installation had the opportunity to glimpse how we are preparing for NASA’s return to the Moon and progress toward humans on the Martian surface.

Buildings 2, 16, 30, 11, 9N, 21, and the Saturn V rocket facility were open to guests and offered a number of exciting displays, such as the Destination Station mobile exhibit, Moon rocks, Apollo-themed quilts, 3rd Rock Radio an inflatable planetarium courtesy of the Lunar Planetary Institute. In addition, attendees learned more about the International Space Station, Orion, Exploration Integration & Science, Commercial Crew, and Astromaterials Research and Exploration Science through talks in the Teague Auditorium. And, always the veritable cherry on top for events like this one, astronauts were available to sign autographs for star struck families and friends.
