JSC Chief Technologist Champions Tech Innovation

Johnson’s Chief Technologist Chris Culbert is a champion for innovation; and therefore, the JSC Chief Technologist Office (CTO) team champions technology innovation initiatives. This year, the team has been supporting the Space Center Houston’s (SCH) Technology Day Tech Talks by gathering together speakers and panelists to highlight the innovative and unique work done at the center. This August, nearly 400 diverse SCH visitors attended technology talks, in the Astronaut Gallery, to learn from Johnson subject matter experts.

“The Space Center Houston Tech Talks are part of the centers efforts to share what we do with the general public,” Culbert said. “Space Center Houston provides a wonderful forum for our technical experts to talk about how we solve some of the complex problems associated with putting humans in space and exploring the solar system. The interaction with the public gives our engineers and scientists a chance to talk about how our daily work not only support human spaceflight but also can impact day to day life on Earth.”

The Technology Day topics and presenters included:
* Mission Operations – The Evolution of Mission Ops with Greg Smith and Tim Hall
* Food Science – Food for Astronauts with Dr. Takiyah Sirmons
* Environmental Life Support – Smelling Coffee in Space and How This Helps Us Get to Mars
with John Graf, Tanya Rogers, and Rawand Rasheed
* Curation – Pieces of Other Worlds on Earth with Julie Mitchell, Marc Fries, and Andrea Harrington
“Public outreach is one of the most important functions of science,” said Cosmic Dust Curator, Marc Fries. “What we learn from scientific work done in laboratories, on spacecraft, and with samples returned from other worlds must be shared so that our entire nation benefits from it. Presenting a talk at Space Center Houston was not just personally enjoyable, but it is an important part of being a scientist.”

The Johnson CTO will continue engaging with and supporting the technology and innovation initiative at SCH at the next Technology Day slated for this November. The team is working on selecting the next set of outstanding presenters from the center and details will be in Roundup Today as soon as they are available.
