Large outreach visit entertains, educates local students

2018-04-13

On April 6, 16 NASA Johnson Space Center interns and one additional team member participated in an intern-organized outreach event sponsored by the International Space Station Program Office in collaboration with the NASA on Campus intern committee. The volunteers interacted with more than 225 sixth-grade students at Deady Intermediate School in Houston with a variety of rotating learning stations. Some of the activities included a mini radiation science class featuring an astronaut spacesuit previously used at the Sonny Carter Training Facility’s Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory; a space food talk showcasing prepackaged samples; a planetary science demo; and an interactive Google virtual reality tour of the space station. This event—the largest the NASA on Campus committee has participated in—actively engaged students, teachers and faculty members during the two-hour interactive workshop. Better yet, the young future explorers had a blast learning about NASA and human spaceflight.
