IRD 2.017 Stand Down Day – making news

2017-09-21
The Information Resources Directorate (IRD) at NASA’ sJohnson Space Center is making an art of engaging the IRD team to share newsworthy information in newsworthy forums. Last October, IRD 2.016 Stand Down Day incorporated TED-style talks on the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act (FITARA) and seven Information Technology (IT) Business Services Assessment (BSA) roles and responsibilities, IT governance, data centers, communications, workstations, collaboration and IT security. IRD took gaming to a whole new level, invoking the popularity of Pokémon Go and the timelessness of a friendly “Family Feud” to keep attendees focused on FITARA and IT BSA topics.

This year, IRD 2.017 Stand Down Day made the news. On Aug. 24, the IRD team joined forces to prepare, perform, present and produce a full day of news shows. “Good Morning IRD” was at the top of the lineup, with an Office of the Chief Information Officer (OCIO) update from NASA CIO Renee Wynn via video, center perspectives from Johnson Director Dr. Ellen Ochoa and IRD looks back and ahead from IRD Director Annette Moore.

“BSA World News” followed with an overall BSA status from Perri Fox, executive officer of the Mission Support Directorate. Next, “TODAY” allowed IRD to hear customer experiences with FITARA and the IT BSA from various organizations: the Engineering Directorate, Human Health and Performance Directorate, Flight Operations Directorate and International Space Station Program. “IRD News Hour” used traffic, entertainment, weather and sports for IRD offices to communicate IT BSA changes, impacts and activities. “IRD Minutes” included three JSC IT security panels to inform and educate attendees on cyber threats, vulnerabilities and programs. “TODAY Baking Show” highlighted successful activities realized from the IRD partnership with the Center Operations Directorate. “Meet the Press” rounded out the lineup as a brief Q&A session.

This non-standard format of conveying information not only allowed the IRD team and JSC IT points of contact to enjoy updates on the Enterprise External Border Protection Project, Enterprise Internal Border – Network Access Control, waivers, Office 365, governance boards, NIST framework and other newsworthy IT activities—it also provided the IRD Customer Engagement and Multimedia Services Office an opportunity to showcase their videography, production and mad staging skills that help JSC organizations tell the NASA story.

Whether making the news, taking tips from TED or a gaming audience’s attention, IRD hopes to continue cultivating the creativity of the IRD team to engage, educate and inform throughout the year and, of course, at the annual stand down day.
