NASA Johnson Space Center’s Darryl Gaines receives Game Changer Award

2017-06-15
Darryl Gaines, assistant to the center director at NASA’s Johnson Space Center, was awarded the Chauncy Glover Project’s Game Changer Award on June 9 during the organization’s third annual gala in Houston.

The award recognizes the accomplishments of a volunteer member of the project, established by ABC Houston TV reporter and news anchor Chauncy Glover, who positively impacts teenage boys in the community.

“I became involved with the project after learning about Mr. Glover, a young, dynamic humanitarian, who himself was honored for his work in Detroit,” Gaines said. “In the past four years, Mr. Glover has helped more than 30 young men break the cycle of poverty and gang violence with full-ride scholarships to college. When he moved to Houston more than a year ago, a mutual friend introduced us.”

This past year was the first year of the project’s existence in Houston. Students who participate in the project are paired with a mentor who is identified as an “outstanding male leader.”

“My favorite part of being associated with the project is that it’s the perfect vehicle when it comes to giving back and sharing my story of coming from the same community,” Gaines said. “It’s also a sobering reminder that I began at the same starting point as most of the young men. I find it rewarding, because I am now at a point in my life and career where I am able to reach back to them and remind them that they should do the same.”

The program’s mission statement is: “To empower, encourage and inspire young men to become strong, moral and confident leaders of society.”

“Nearly a dozen high school graduates from impoverished communities are on their way to college,” Gaines said. “Most, if not all of these young men are the first in their families to seek a college education.”

The program was created to groom inner-city teenage boys into upstanding and accomplished gentleman. Gaines noted that the project also focuses on education, manhood, self-empowerment, financial responsibility, etiquette, college readiness, relationship building, community service and so much more.

“It’s an honor to be recognized by the project, along with other recipients, for my life’s work and commitment to helping others and for promoting NASA and STEM education as conduits for opportunities, careers and one of many pathways to a better way of life for 21st-century dreamers,” Gaines said.
