Johnson’s Feds Feed Families Campaign Fights Hunger, Surpasses 2021 Goal

Things have been hard for families in 2020 … and now even in 2021. However, there are still many glimmers of hope that can be found, especially when you consider what team members from NASA’s Johnson Space Center have just accomplished during the JSC’s 2021 Feds Feed Families charitable campaign. Through mostly virtual donations and a culminating drive-by, contact-free Stuff the Truck event on Aug. 27, Johnson team rallied to support the needs of our surrounding community through the Galveston County Food Bank.

Johnson’s goal was a robust 45,000 pounds of food, or nearly 23 tons. Well, the Johnson team came together and surpassed that goal, donating 120,303 pounds of food and household items for veterans, families, and especially single mothers and college students who rely on the food pantry for assistance. Incidentally, the agency goal was 160,000 pounds, and Johnson’s contributions alone comprised 70% of the agency’s total — a staggering statistic that shows the profound generosity exhibited throughout the drive.

The donations made during this campaign can also be attributed to the each organization’s food drive “champion.” Johnson and the White Sands Test Facility deputized 25 people to help garner support and share information on Feds Feed Families.

“JSC had the largest team of champions, and each one of them was very eager to help,” said Jessica Cordero, JSC’s 2021 Feds Feed Families champion chair, “Most centers had one or two people sharing all of the communications. I know this is why we had such success!”

Stuff the Truck made a huge impact in the overall numbers, boasting 26 volunteers responsible for collecting 4,525 pounds of food, pet food, and household items, as well as $6,815 in-kind donations. This event alone translates to more than 30,000 future meals to alleviate hunger.

Warm hearts leading to stomachs warmed by comfort food is something we can all get behind, now more than ever.
