Center Goal? OBLITERATED. Congrats, JSC!

Not that there are contests for generosity … but if there were … NASA’s Johnson Space Center would rank up there. During the latest JSC Feeds Families Food Drive, the center set an ambitious goal to restock the Galveston County Food Bank, which services families facing food insecurity right in our community, with 60,000 pounds of food and resources as we head into the winter months.

And, we didn’t just meet the goal. Together, JSC blasted the 60,000-pound marker to the stratosphere (and beyond, since you know we can’t just stop there). Thanks to the generosity of the Johnson family, the food bank received more than 100,000 pounds of donations.

Some organizations got creative in garnering support for the drive. The Human Health and Performance (HH&P) Directorate, for instance, encouraged employees to make sculptures out of their donations during its annual CANstruction contest. Canned food was artistically arranged to depict human space exploration and show how Johnson connects to NASA missions.

“I continue to be truly impressed with the amazing creativity and generosity of our HH&P team,” said HH&P Director Cathy Koerner. “Creativity in terms of the overall design of the projects and how they connect to the HH&P and NASA missions. Generosity in terms of the sheer number of people who donate their time and treasure to help families all across our area. Every year the enthusiasm and participation in our ‘CANstruction’ competition grows. In fact, our folks are already plotting what they’ll do for next year’s competition!”

Meanwhile, External Relations Office (ERO) came up with a novel way to get support for the food drive, illustrating how, as an organization, they are renowned for outside-the-box thinking. Led by ERO Director Debbie Conder, she and other managers offered themselves up — specifically, to be on the receiving end of pies in the face — as employees bought raffle tickets or donated cans to be allowed the opportunity to send the whipped confections airborne. No leaders were harmed during the team-building activity — just maybe some pride.

The center is still working to get the final numbers on which organization donated the most weight per person. When available, the stats will be shared on Roundup Live. Stay connected with us for later results.

Tis the season for giving! The Combined Federal Campaign (CFC) is now underway. Visit the CFC site to see how you can Show Some (More) Love!
